THE PROMETHEUS THEORY
An interdisciplinary framework of symbolic consciousness, belonging, agency, survival, grief, and identity
The Prometheus Theory is an interdisciplinary framework for the human condition created by symbolic consciousness. It proposes a shared architecture across evolutionary history, embodied survival, psychological development, mythology, and theology. Psychology is one language of the framework rather than the whole of it.
THE PROMETHEAN PROBLEM
Human beings gained an extraordinary power: memory, imagination, anticipation, language, and meaning can make what is absent psychologically present. Yet symbolic consciousness remains embodied in an animal nervous system organized to respond to immediate danger.The result is the Glitch at the center of the theory: the symbolic mind can continually recreate a threat that the animal body can only continually survive.The wound is renewed because symbolic consciousness can renew what is absent.

EVOLUTIONARY
Fire, transformation, memory, anticipation, culture.
EMBODIED
An animal nervous system responding to represented danger.
PSYCHOLOGICAL
Belonging, agency, shame, powerlessness, survival, grief, identity.
MYTHOLOGICAL & THEOLOGICAL
Gift and Fall, Eden and exile, Guardian and flaming sword, descent, resurrection and return.
The theory does not reduce one language to another. It proposes that each reveals a different level of the same recurring human structure.
BELONGING, AGENCY, AND WOUND
Belonging
Having a place in relationship without manufacturing the right to exist.Agency
The capacity to act, choose, refuse, respond, influence, and participate.
Separation is a meaningful break in belonging or agency. Separation contains loss, but loss does not automatically become a wound. A wound forms when loss acquires an enduring expectation or verdict that continues to organize survival.
Belonging wounded → Shame
Agency wounded → Powerlessness
Both converging → Worthlessness
THE FOUR GUARDIANS
Fight, flight, fawn, and freeze are survival responses. The theory calls them Guardians because persistent survival can protect against unfinished grief and eventually become load-bearing in identity.

Acceptance is not a fifth Guardian. It belongs to grief itself.
WHEN SURVIVAL BECOMES IDENTITY
Repetition can make a survival response load-bearing in identity. Fight becomes strength that cannot yield. Flight becomes perspective that cannot descend. Fawn becomes goodness that cannot refuse. Freeze becomes acceptance that cannot respond.
The framework calls this defended identity and gives it the mythological name Pride: survival crystallized into personality.
The flaming sword represents this defended organization: protection that once preserved continuity but can eventually guard against return.
MYTH AS SYMBOLIC KNOWLEDGE
Myth gives the architecture image, character, landscape, sequence, and destination. It preserves recurring structures of separation, protection, grief, identity, descent, and return in symbolic form.

The defended organization loses authority, grief becomes accessible, and participation becomes possible again.
The framework proposes that ancient symbolic traditions may preserve recurring structures of human suffering and transformation long before those structures could be described biologically or clinically.

Worthlessness has no separate Door because it is the compound of both wounds.
The Guardian is not destroyed. The survival response remains available, but no longer governs identity.
WHAT THE THEORY PROPOSES
- The verdict is the hinge between loss and identity.
- Persistent survival and unfinished grief are complementary.
- The four survival responses correspond to characteristic unfinished movements of grief.
- Compensation is structurally mismatched: belonging cannot substitute for agency, and agency cannot compel belonging.
- Shame and powerlessness have different routes toward worthlessness.
- Psychological, embodied, evolutionary, mythological, and theological languages may disclose different levels of one recurring structure.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
The Prometheus Theory is an independent interdisciplinary research initiative examining symbolic consciousness, human suffering, survival, grief, identity, mythology, theology, and return. The project is presently conceptual and developmental rather than a validated clinical treatment.
